Probation is "the suspension of the imposition or execution of a sentence and the order of conditional and revocable release in the community..." California Penal Code 1203(a).

Every misdemeanant, and most felons are eligible for probation. Certain felons are excluded for public policy reasons, subject to a showing of "unusual" facts. California Penal Code 462
